Why Post-Op Massages Shouldn’t Last More Than an Hour—And Why That’s a Good Thing

Post-operative care is one of the most important steps in achieving the results you want after cosmetic surgery. At Peachy’s, we specialize in post-op lymphatic care and body sculpting, and we’re passionate about making sure our clients are educated, safe, and supported every step of the way.

One of the most common questions we get is:

“Why are your post-op massages shorter than a traditional massage?”

The answer is simple—because when your body is healing, less is more. In fact, sessions longer than an hour can actually do more harm than good.

Let’s break down why that is.

  1. Your Body is In a Healing, Inflammatory State

Right after surgery, your body is inflamed, swollen, and working overtime to repair itself. Pushing the body too hard or for too long during this time can lead to:

  • Increased swelling and inflammation

  • Tissue trauma

  • Delayed healing

  • Fibrosis (hardening of tissue)

  • Fluid being pushed into incorrect areas

This is why our sessions typically last between 25 and 45 minutes, with an absolute maximum of 60 minutes only when it’s truly appropriate.

  1. The Lymphatic System Needs Gentle, Targeted Work

Post-op massages often focus on the lymphatic system, which is a delicate, low-pressure system that responds best to light, rhythmic, and intentional movements.

Too much pressure or too long of a session can:

  • Damage fragile lymph vessels

  • Trigger more inflammation

  • Slow down fluid drainage instead of helping it

  • Overstimulate your nervous system and cause fatigue

We believe in supporting the body’s natural healing rhythm—not overwhelming it.

  1. Each Massage at Peachy’s is Customized

No two post-op journeys are the same. At Peachy’s, we carefully assess what your body needs at every stage of recovery. Some clients may only need light drainage, while others may be ready for sculpting or fibrosis work.

That’s why we don’t offer “cookie-cutter” services. Instead, we tailor the massage length and technique to your current condition, making sure it’s safe and effective for your body.

  1. It’s About Frequency, Not Duration

Healing after surgery is a journey, not a one-time fix. We typically recommend anywhere from 12 to 30 massages, sometimes more, depending on:

  • The type of surgery

  • The level of swelling and trauma

  • Presence of fibrosis or other complications

  • How your body is responding to recovery

  • Your commitment to at-home care and hydration

Smaller, consistent sessions are much more effective than occasional long, intense ones.

What You Can Expect at Peachy’s

  • Massage Duration: 25 to 45 minutes (rarely up to 60 minutes)

  • Customized Care: Every session is designed based on your stage of healing

  • Safe Techniques: Latin-based post-op sculpting and lymphatic drainage with medically-informed precision

Your body deserves to be handled with care.
